Medical research has shown that exposure to natural environments improves recovery rates from medical procedures and aids in restoration of psychological challenges. The Acoustic Ecology team is running cross-disciplinary experiments that explore how hospitalized and elderly people may benefit from being in nature virtually through the use of the EcoRift system. Additional experiments are planned to examine how the 3D ambisonic audio cues change visual perception, with users who often report seeing something they hear in the sound field even if it is not in the image space.
