Co-Founder & Director · Professor, Arts, Media & Engineering, ASU
Garth Paine is a composer, sound artist, and researcher whose work centres on environmental listening, acoustic ecology, and interactive sonic environments. He co-founded AELab in 2015 and leads the lab's research into psychoacoustics, field recording, and community engagement with the sonic environment.
Paine teaches courses in Soundscape Ecology and has published widely on topics including acoustic ecology, interactive music systems, and community engagement through sound. His 2017 paper Acoustic Ecology 2.0 (Contemporary Music Review) is a foundational text for the lab's mission. He has presented his research and creative work internationally, including at IRCAM and the United Nations.
Co-Founder · Professor of Ecomusicology, School of Music, ASU
Sabine Feisst is a musicologist and ecomusicologist whose research explores the interrelationships between music, culture, ecology, and nature. She co-founded AELab in 2015 and leads the lab's ecomusicology and academic programs.
Feisst has presented at the Life Sciences Seminar on the connections between psychoacoustics and citizen science, and her ecomusicology work at AELab encompasses animal studies, activist music practices, and ecofeminist artists. She supervises courses, independent studies, capstone projects, theses, and dissertations in the field of ecomusicology.
